เป็นเรื่องของอุปกรณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสายใยแก้วนาแสงครับ หลายคนคงไม่ค่อยใส่ใจเท่าไหร่อาจจะเป็นเพราะว่า นานทีถึงจะมีการซื้อ นานทีถึงจะมีการเข้าไปจัดการกับมัน ซึ่งก็จะมีผู้เชี่ยวชาญคอยดูแล เนื่องจากว่าอุปกรณ์สาหรับการติดตั้ง ซ่อมบารุงบริหารจัดการ สิ่งต่างเหล่านี้จาเป็นต้องมีความรู้ความสามารถในด้านนั้นๆ โดยตรง และที่สาคัญอุปกรณ์เหล่านี้ราคาก็สุดแสนแพง ถึงอย่างไรก็ตามชาว Network ทั้งหลายก็หนีไม่พ้นที่จะต้องเข้าไปเกี่ยวข้องอยู่กับมันอย่างน้อยก็รู้ความหมายและหน้าที่ของมันบ้างก็ยังดี โดยทั่วไปแล้วอุปกรณ์กระจายสัญญาณหลัก Switch จะมีช่องสาหรับเชื่อมต่อสัญญาณกับสาย UTP เท่านั้นและข้อจากัดของสาย UTP ก็คือมันเชื่อมต่อได้ระยะไกลสุดที่ 100 เมตร ความเร็วในการรับส่งข้อมูลสูงสุกที่ 100 Mbps. ดังนั้นในการที่จะทาให้อุปกรณ์ที่เรียกว่า Switch สามารถเชื่อมต่อได้ระยะทางที่ไกลขึ้น การรับส่งข้อมูลทาได้มากขึ้นนั้นจะต้องเปลี่ยนการเชื่อมต่อจากสายสัญญาณแบบสายทองแดง UTP ไปเป็นสายใยแก้วนาแสง Fiber Optic เนื่องจาก Fiber Optic ได้ระยะทางเป็นกิโลเมตรขึ้นไปการรับส่งข้อมูลก็ว่ากันที่ 1000Mbps. หรือ 1Gbps. ดังนั้นจะให้ได้ระยะทางเพิ่มการรับส่งข้อมมากขึ้นจาเป็นจะต้องเพิ่มอุปกรณ์สาหรับเชื่อมต่อด้วยสายใยแก้วนาแสง อุปกรณ์ที่จะต้องเพิ่มเข้าไปนั้นเรียกกันว่า โมดูลกิกะบิต (Module Gigabit) ซึ่งก็มีด้วยกันหลายแบบให้เลือกใช้ตามลักษณะการเชื่อมต่ออีกทั้งต้องเลือกแบบที่สามารถใช้ร่วมกับอุปกรณ์ที่มีอยู่ด้วย
